Chauffeur 9.9 Moves Completely to Google Places API (New)

  • 58

Google has introduced an important change to its Maps Platform: Places API (Legacy) is no longer available for activation in new Google Cloud projects. Existing projects can continue using the legacy service, but businesses configuring Google Maps for the first time need to use its newer APIs.

To address this change, Chauffeur Taxi Booking System 9.9 has been completely migrated to Google Places API (New). This update keeps the plugin compatible with new Google Cloud projects while establishing a modern foundation for future improvements to its Google Maps integration.

Why This Change Matters

Google Places plays an essential role in Chauffeur. It powers address suggestions when customers enter pickup and drop-off locations, supports location-based restrictions, and helps administrators configure routes in the WordPress dashboard.

For customers using an existing Google Cloud project, the legacy integration may still work. However, newly created projects can no longer enable Places API (Legacy) through the standard activation process.

Without updating the integration, new Chauffeur installations could encounter problems with essential location-related features. Migrating to Places API (New) removes this dependency and ensures that new customers can configure their booking system using Google’s current technology.

What’s Changed in Chauffeur 9.9?

The migration required updates across multiple components of the booking system, not just a simple API replacement.

The most important changes include:

  • Address Autocomplete: The booking form now uses Places API (New) to provide location suggestions when customers enter pickup, drop-off, or waypoint addresses.
  • Driving Zone Restrictions: Location-based autocomplete restrictions have been adapted to the new API.
  • Routes Configuration: Google Places integration used for configuring routes in the WordPress dashboard has been updated.
  • Other Places-Dependent Features: Remaining components relying on the legacy service have also been migrated.

We also resolved related warnings in the browser console, resulting in a cleaner integration.

A Foundation for Smarter Location Features

While compatibility is the immediate reason for this update, moving to Places API (New) also creates new opportunities for Chauffeur’s development.

Google’s newer API provides more flexible tools for handling location searches, including geographic search preferences and restrictions. This gives us a better foundation for improving how address suggestions are displayed, how search results are prioritized, and how Driving Zone restrictions are managed.

These capabilities can help us further refine the booking experience, particularly for transportation businesses operating within specific cities, regions, or service areas.

More Opportunities for API Optimization

The new API also introduces more flexible ways to manage requests and billing. Features such as session-based autocomplete and selective data retrieval provide opportunities to optimize how applications communicate with Google Maps services.

Ready for What’s Next

Chauffeur 9.9 no longer depends on Places API (Legacy). Existing customers benefit from an updated integration, while new customers can set up their Google Cloud projects without relying on the legacy service.

Most importantly, this update is more than a compatibility fix. It prepares Chauffeur for continued improvements to address autocomplete, location restrictions, and Google Maps integration in upcoming releases.
